# GHG emissions in SmartHead: which calculator to use

Where your greenhouse gas emissions live in SmartHead, what Scope 1, 2 and 3 mean, and which of the two calculators gets you to a defensible number fastest.

Your carbon footprint is a handful of rows – fuel, vehicles, electricity, heating, your value chain – each one calculated from what you consumed and an emission factor. SmartHead brings the right factors to each row, does the math, and puts the result straight into the disclosure your framework asks for. This page tells you where to start.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Saves you time:** you never type an emission factor from a PDF. Every row offers **Suggested emission factors** for your country and reporting year – one click, and the row calculates itself.
{% endhint %}

## Where GHG lives

| You report under… | Your GHG disclosure | Rows you fill |
| ----------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Revised ESRS**  | **E1-8** Gross scope 1, 2, 3 GHG emissions            | Scope 1, 2 (location- and market-based) and all Scope 3 categories                                               |
| **ESRS**          | **E1-6** Gross scopes 1, 2, 3 and total GHG emissions | same as above                                                                                                    |
| **VSME**          | **B3** (Scope 1 and 2) and **C3** (Scope 3)           | Own equipment, own vehicles, electricity, heating…                                                               |
| No framework yet | **GHG calculator** tile on the dashboard | A guided questionnaire – see [The guided GHG calculator](/ghg-emissions-co2-calculator/standalone-calculator.md) |

Dashboard › **ESG reporting** › the framework tile › the disclosure row. Every GHG data point is a table with one row per emission source category and a total in t CO₂eq.

## Two calculators – which one is for you

| | Row calculator (in a data point) | Guided GHG calculator |
| ------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Where**     | The calculator icon on a row of E1-8, E1-6, B3 or C3                        | Dashboard › **GHG calculator** tile                    |
| **Best for** | Reporting under ESRS, Revised ESRS or VSME | A first footprint without a framework, small companies |
| **Factors** | Emission factor database with country suggestions, plus your own factors | Older built-in factor sets (TO CHECK below) |
| **Big lists** | Excel round-trip per row – paste 100 vehicles, pick factors from a dropdown | Row by row in the app |
| **Result** | Lands in the disclosure, the report and the Finstat card | Summary step with totals and charts |

**Our recommendation:** if you report under a framework, calculate inside the framework's disclosure. The result is already where the report and the auditor expect it. Use the guided calculator only for a quick first estimate.

{% hint style="warning" %}
TO CHECK: rows saved with the older calculator (labels **Switch to complex calculator**, **Predefined GHG templates**, **GWP IPCC**) still open that calculator; every new row opens the row calculator described in this guide. Confirm which disclosures still show older rows in production and whether the guided calculator uses the emission factor database yet (Q9).
{% endhint %}

## Scope 1, 2 and 3 in three sentences

{% hint style="info" %}
**Scope 1** is what you burn or leak yourself – fuel in your boilers and vehicles, refrigerants, process gases. **Scope 2** is the electricity, heat and steam you buy. **Scope 3** is everything else in your value chain, from purchased goods to business travel, in fifteen categories. See [Glossary](/help/glossary.md#scope-1-2-3).
{% endhint %}

## How a GHG data point works

* **One row per source category** – **Stationary combustion**, **Mobile combustion**, **Process**, **Refrigerants / fugitives** (Scope 1); **Electricity**, **Heating, cooling and steam** and the market-based rows (Scope 2); **Category 1 Purchased goods and services** to Category 15 (Scope 3).
* **The calculator icon** after the unit opens the row calculator. Hover it: the tooltip says **CO2 Calculator**.
* **A calculated row is read-only.** Once a row has sources, its value comes from them and shows a calculator icon in the value cell. Change the sources, not the number.
* **Rows can be split** by site, country or your own breakdown – the row's **"…"** menu › **Split using template**. See [Breakdowns](/working-with-your-data/breakdowns.md).
* **Unit:** every result is in **t CO₂eq**; the total adds up the rows.

**Older interface:** this video shows an earlier version of SmartHead. The steps are the same; buttons may look different.

## Good to know

* **Who may calculate:** administrators, and reporters who have a request on the data point. Auditors and viewers open the drawer read-only.
* **Autosave:** the drawer's **Add** button confirms the row; the disclosure page then saves it like any other value. No separate Save.
* **Charts:** a GHG data point is numeric, so **Add visualization** gives you a donut or bar chart of your scopes for the report. See [Charts](/working-with-your-data/visualizations.md).
